Steve Elliott Quasar TON 618 19th May 25 Behold TON 618! A monster that is 18.2 billion light years away (Redshift 2.2, so light travel distance is about 10.8 billion ly). It is 140 trillion times the luminosity of the Sun. The mass of the central black hole is estimated to be 64 billion Solar masses - higher than the combined mass of all the stars in the Milky Way galaxy. It was first observed during a survey by the Tonantzintla observatory in Mexico in 1957, hence the TON. Since Quasars were not recognised until 1963 it sat as ‘just another star in a survey’ until 1970 when a radio survey identified it as a Quasar, one of the most distant and luminous known.
